A guide to being cheap chic

Living in LA has taught me a valuable lesson: There's a cheaper version to everything. There's tons of fashion companies that have a large following of fashionistas, but not all of us can afford to have that specific look. The beauty of living in LA is having the fashion district at your fingertips. Along with an array of thrift shops that hold treasures of rich hollywood gals who have easily donated their clothes when they've worn them just once.
I am a fashion l.o.v.e.r. and it kills me not to be able to afford things like Novella Royale's amazing bells, or that amazing For Love and Lemons lace dress. Well Vanessa and relatable fashionistas, do not fret cause there is a light at the end of that tunnel. Go to the fashion district in LA! There you will find an array of the exact same merchandise that is sold at Nasty Gal. Shoes galore, clothes, and accessories galore as well. Delve into the busy streets of Santee Alley to discover it all, it's worth it. I have purchased numerous kick ass shoes for all under $30 bucks in that alley. And I have a favorite jewelry shop there that has everything for $1, I bought 4 gold and silver ring and bracelet chain combos today and I cannot wait to wear them, that's also where I purchase my cheap gold hoop earrings for my Brooklyn girl phase that I am currently experiencing. And I also purchased all those rings from above from there. Shopping in downtown does involve patience, but you never leave empty handed. I went there today and had actual errands and supplies to purchase and ended up spending a lot more than I had anticipated because I found a hidden treasure: Artini Accessories Inc. They are currently having a 60% ofF sale on all their jewelry and bought myself some amazing pieces that were worth the price. I'm talking $8 bucks here instead of lets say, $30?!
And one more secret of mine is DOLLAR SHOPS! I swear, these are a safe haven for me. When I first moved here I was on a mad search for A Dollar Tree but instead I found The Dollar King in Glendale. Best. Dollar. Store. Ever. I think they only have a location in Glendale so I apologize to those who don't live in LA. They have the greatest make-up aisle I have ever seen in a dollar store. Quality stuff too. It's mainly lip, eye and nail stuff and that's all you really need if you're gonna spend a dollar on it. Face make-up is a different story, that needs to be purchased with more thought, caution, and money. Everytime I go, I buy a new lipstick or nail polish and I'm always satisfied when I get my first use out of it. That saves me so much money on having to spend it on MAC or organic make-up. And the stuff I use still looks AS GOOD as MAC. That picture above is proof on how much I have purchased from the Dollar King. So before you go spending money on things that aren't worth the price, investigate around your city or online and see the cheaper alternatives  because honey, there always is.

Until next time

I WALK IN STILTS

You remember what I was saying about my 70s/tribal obsession in the last post? Well this is what I meant. My unnecessariness escalate to an all time high yesterday. It's like I've come to a crossroads where the 70s, Iris Apfel, and African culture all somehow intermix with each other and create a wonder of so many elements. I kept thinking Iris Apfel probably dressed like this when she was my age. If you don't know by now, Iris Apfel is my icon!
As for my outfit goodies, I wore all of the newest editions to my closet in one complete outfit. I foolishly WISELY got these Kimichi Blue platforms that I soon discovered are the most dangerous shoes I own. I may have severely hurt my ankle walking in these bitches but I am determined to master the art of walking in heels that have 5 inch platforms. As for my beautiful kimono/robe whatever you may call, I found it at a thrift shop. For 3 bucks!
Oh and don't mind my ridiculous amounts of jewelry. How can this kimono go without statement jewelry?

WEARING: Thrifted kimono, Kimichi Blue Platforms, Dee Lux sunglasses and jewelry from Anthro, Forever21, vintage and My own Designs. Orange clutch from wholesale-orders.

Baby it's you

Listen up! And listen to this cause I can't stop swayin to it, its the only way to move to this song.

I am the first to admit that my blog content for the last couple of weeks has been "asi asi" but with good reason! I am currently preparing to be in Orange County's RAW ARTISTS showcase. The art director contacted me for my jewelry designs and we got to talking and I am now one of the artists being featured. So that explains my lack of outfit posts cause I am at home the majority of the time looking like a crazy bum creating pieces that I myself can't stop obsessing over. And that brings up another topic. I am saving my new jewelry pieces for the showcase, so I won't release them online till after FEB 17TH. If you are in the Orange County area, the event is at the YOST THEATRE, starts at 8pm, 21 and up and its friday, feb 17th. The event is gonna be a blast, there are gonna be photographers, press, dj's, bands, fashion designers and more. Stop by to get a sneak peek and a chance to be among the first to purchase my jewelry.

Oh hold up, I'm not done. I am also working on a collab with a photographer friend, Anthony. He's currently working towards building a site for his photography because he's got a vast collection of photos that need to be shown on the blogosphere. So we're gonna work on some projects together. Let our two minds collide and create wonderful things. So keep checking back cause it's going to be featured on my blog very soon.
Here is a taste of Anthony's work:

In the meantime, take a look at the stuff I've already got posted. I've been running short on  some supplies for some stellar pieces I've got to make but I'm stocking up this weekend so be ready for some Bruja madness coming late next week!

Inspirations: All boxed up

HAVE ANY OF YOU NOTICED THE SUDDEN/EXTREME TRANSITION FROM TAILORED PIECES TO BOXEY SILHOUETTES?! THE FASHION INDUSTRY ALWAYS NEEDS TO TAKE IT TOO FAR. LAST SEASON TAILORED PIECES WERE ALL THE RAGE AND NOW DESIGNERS LIKE HUSSEIN CHALAYAN, RICK OWENS AND OF COURSE BALENCIAGA HAVE TAKEN BOXEY FIGURES INTO CONSIDERATION. THEY WEREN'T SATISFIED WITH LAST SEASON'S TAILORED SILHOUETTES SO THEY HAD TO GET EXTREME! THEY TOOK IT UP A NOTCH AND NOW BOXEY FIGURES ARE ALL OVER THE RUNWAYS, RUNNING AROUND LIKE FANCY CARDBOARD BOXES. THEY JUST MADE IT HARDER FOR PEOPLE (ME) TO ENCAPSULATE THESE LOOKS IN EVERYDAY. REAL. LIFE. BUT I CANNOT DENY THAT THE TEXTURE, FABRIC AND SHAPE COMBINATIONS ARE EXTREMELY EYE CATCHING. INSPIRATION OF THE WEEK MY FRIENDS: BOXEY SILHOUETTES. AND WITH ALL THIS TAKING OVER MY BRAIN, I CAN'T HELP BUT GIVE CREDIT TO THESE DESIGNERS FOR INSPIRING MY LATEST JEWELRY PIECES THAT I FINISHED TODAY! I FINISHED ABOUT 5 NEW PIECES! PRODUCTIVITY AT ITS BEST!
